Bruce Lee was an accomplished martial artist before he become recognized as an actor. He was a student of many traditional fighting styles, especially Wing Chun Kung Fu. He mixed the crucial elements of the several martial arts he perfected and created Jeet Kune Do or JKD. Bruce Lee desired to come up with a martial art form that was non-traditional and that every person could modify to his own needs. JKD is influenced not only by Asian forms of martial arts, but also takes elements from Western boxing and fencing. Lee’s intention was to make Jeet Kune Do into a type of martial art that allowed the individual to create their own style.

Although Jeet Kune Do was created by Bruce Lee to be a non-classical martial art style, a lot of its moves are based in a much older style called Wing Chun. This is a style of Kung Fu that’s still widely taught these days. Win Chun was developed in China centuries ago by a Shaolin nun called Ng Mui. The tactics of Wing Chun are quite effective for people who need to go up against larger and stronger foes. It is also designed to be quicker to master than other styles of Kung Fu. It’s common for students of Wing Chun to practice their strategies using a wooden dummy. Bruce Lee mastered Wing Chun and other fighting styles for many years before he invented Jeet Kune Do.

People today might wonder how relevant Jeet Kune Do is, particularly when mixed martial arts are quite popular. Since his demise, Bruce Lee has had an enormous influence on mixed martial arts and what Jeet Kune Do offered can be seen today. What mixed martial arts is not all that different from what Bruce Lee developed in Jeet Kune Do, which is a combination of all the great techniques of all martial arts in one system. In fact, The president of the UFC, Dana White, previously stated that Bruce Lee is the father of mixed martial arts. You can purchase an affordable agility ladder, or create one of your own with rope, tape, sticks, or other makeshift items you have around to form a ladder pattern on the ground.

Here’s one drill to try: In the five count drill – you will perform the most complex pattern. Start by hopping to your right foot, outside the first square to the right. Next, you’ll step with your left foot into the square and follow then with your right foot in the same square. After that, step into the second square with the left foot, and follow up with the right. In the third square, you’ll reverse what you did in the first square, stepping with your left foot outside, then your right inside, followed by the left foot. Continue through the squares.
